A native of Salem, NY, Jon McClellan became interested in photography in 1955 when he had a darkroom in the basement of his grandfather’s funeral home in Salem. During the years since he has been an enthusiastic amateur photographer. He is now retired after 40 years as a funeral director, and is content to devote more time to his photography.
Along with his wife Sandy's freelance writing, he has been published in Conservationist, Islands, Digital Photographer, Adirondack Life magazines and area newspapers. He is currently one of the staff photographers for Hill Country Observer.
After years of working with film he is a happy convert to digital photography—its flexibility and the ease of printing photos without a darkroom. He strives to keep his photos as true to life as possible with minimum editing.
Jon had his first solo show in 2005 at Arts 220 in Salem and recently has been shown at McCartee's Barn and North Main Gallery in Salem.
He gives recognition to his mother, Ruth, who passed away in 2003, for his interest in nature photography. "She often reminded me that we were fortunate to live in one of the most scenic areas of the world and I like to think I am sharing with others "my view" of this beauty."
